Non è raro che i cantanti di band (di successo o meno) dopo alcuni anni di attività decidano di intreprendere una carriera solista. Molto spesso questi progetti mettono in mostra la reale anima di artisti che si sentono ingabbiati dai clichè di genere in cui devono muoversi con i propri compagni. Alcune volte è solo una questione di ego. Dorthia Cottrell è la cantante dei doomster Windhand, band la cui definizione di genere sta comunque stretta, e arriva con Death Folk Country al suo secondo disco solista dopo l'album omonimo del 2015 (attualmente introvabile in formato fisico, speriamo in una ristampa). A differenza dei colleghi succitati Dorthia per certi versi completa il sound della sua band madre, un po' come fecero le parentesi acustiche degli Alice In Chains tra un disco e l'altro. Il mood è infatti quello maliconico e lento della band madre con la sola differenza che le canzoni sono accompagnate esclusivamente da una chitarra e qualche suono d'ambiente (chitarre suonate anche da un paio di Inter Arma). Per esempio il riff di "Midnight Boy" potrebbe essere quello portante di un brano dei Windhand. Nel brano, tra l'altro, troviamo proprio il bassista Parker Chandler assieme a Gina Gleason dei Baroness e Leanne Martz delle Misstallica. Le tre ragazze hanno tempo fa registrato un brano sotto il nome Darling lasciando presagire la nascita di un nuovo interessante progetto.

Secondo me queste belle canzoni sono esattamente quello che mancano ai dischi monolitici della band principale che seppur ottimi godrebbero di maggior considerazione grazie ad un ambientazione "death folk country".

L'unico difetto del disco è la copertina orrenda, per il resto è tutto più che ottimo.
